Rusutsu: Powder Skiing Have on Three Mountains

The northern Japanese region of Hokkaido has the best powder snowfalls anywhere on the planet. The magnificent resort of Rusutsu serves up what can only be described as pure powder paradise. This resort has the best slopes for unbridled skiing, on the most accessible tree runs and backcountry. Extensive areas provide an enviable variety of groomed and fresh powder ski runs.

Rusutsu is less than an hour from the bigger resorts on Mt Niseko-Annupuri. It lies close to Lake Toya, on the other side of Mt Yotei from Niseko. This has made it popular for day trips from the busy Hirafu and Niseko resorts. However, for a fabulous resort with perfectly groomed runs and untracked powder, Rusutsu has few equals. It has a diversity of terrain to cater for all levels, with plenty of off-piste skiing and snowboarding on offer.

How to get there

Rusutsu is located in the Shiribeshi subprefecture, and can be conveniently accessed via the New Chitose Airport. From there, it is a 90 minute trip by bus to Rusutsu. Skiers who have set up base at the more popular Niseko can also reach Rusutsu in about 40 minutes by bus from Kutchan. The trip from Sapporo takes about two hours, with bus services proceeding onto Niseko during the peak December to April ski season.
